Logline

Caught between her family’s expectations at the dinner table, a young woman escapes into a surreal theatre stage inside her mind. There she must piece together her identity and decide whether to keep playing the role she’s been given.

Artist Statement

Experimentation is at the core of my practice. I’m always drawn to exploring what different mediums can do and how they can work together. Combining paint-on-glass and puppet stop-motion felt like a natural fit for this film, both technically and as a reflection of how I approach animation. Ad lib explores identity and family expectation through a surreal theatrical world, taking personal experience and translating it through metaphor and image. The handmade quality of stop-motion felt right for a story that is about performance, the roles we’re given, the expectations we carry, and the image we present to others.

Victoria Chirciu

Victoria is an experimental animator from Romania, whose love for painting sparked a desire to see her work move across a screen. She is drawn to stories that feel personal and unhurried, the kind that find beauty in the small, everyday moments that are easy to miss. Victoria moved to Vancouver to study 2D + Experimental Animation at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she is completing her thesis film, Ad lib. Outside the studio, Victoria spends her time teaching pottery and painting at Bella Ceramica and volunteering at local film festivals.
