Synopsis
An insatiable fascination of humankind for flight and power destroys human civilization, the resilience of nature reclaims the landscape. In this post-apocalypse, we follow fantastical birds through water and plants on top of military and industrial remains, as they preen, feed, soar, and rest. As the birds fly into the sunset, they soothe the jagged ruins and bring back a peaceful world. More Than Sapiens explores an intimate journey in an imaginary ecosystem through the perspective of non-human protagonists.

Director Statement
Growing up moving across cities in China and travelling to Canada and Australia to study, being around the birds wherever I visit became an important component of my sense of connection with a place, and I became deeply intrigued by birds and sympathetic of their existence. More Than Sapiens emerged from my reflection on humanity’s persistent fascination with flight. Birds taught us flight and yet throughout history humans have used the knowledge of aviation for destruction and violence. In a world where war is displacing humans and animals alike, I wish to tell an imaginary future where the land has had time to heal and birds can claim a free and open sky. With intimate camera angles and imaginative landscapes, I hope to invite curiosity and reflection on our coexistence with more-than-human lives and make this a gentle reminder to look twice the next time you encounter one of our feathered neighbours.
