The Ways We Sit Together, 2026

Katelynn Agnew

The Ways We Sit Together explores connection through small, often overlooked moments in everyday life.
Working primarily with natural light in a mixture of staged and observed scenes, these images aim to replicate authenticity as closely as possible. The photographs are made with a sense of pause. They often feel like film stills, where time seems to slow down and nothing is pushed toward a clear conclusion. People are shown resting, sitting together, or moving through familiar routines. The images don’t try to tell full stories or point to a specific event. They leave space for the viewer to sit with them and notice what’s happening in a quieter way. Considering the beauty of the “uneventful” moments. Considering the quiet and aiming to capture it in a way that honours and uplifts it. Considering the impact of those moments as well. The work is made while keeping in mind themes of slowness and attention as both aesthetic and ethical choices. In a culture becoming so dependent on technologies that attempt to find alternatives to traditional human connection, this work was made as a reminder to everyone (including its creator) of the importance of these unappreciated moments and the feelings that live alongside them.
