We Are Still Us
Yuhong Lin
Synopsis
A young boy discovers a frightened fox hiding in the tall grass. The fox bites him at first,
but instead of fleeing, the boy stays. Slowly, trust forms between them, and they grow inseparable—
spending their days wandering through fields, chasing butterflies, fishing by the pond, and resting
together in the sun. Their quiet world is shattered when war breaks out without warning. Forced to leave
with his parents, the boy departs in a horse-drawn carriage, leaving the fox behind to watch him disappear
down the road. Years later, the boy returns as a grown man. A fallen persimmon awakens memories of the
fox, and a fleeting glimpse of a fox’s tail draws him into the forest. Following the moving shadow, he
discovers a hidden cave where he finds the fox once more. Kneeling down, he gently holds the fox in his
arms, finally reuniting with his childhood companion.
