Celtic Mythology : Series One is an exploration into my Scottish heritage through the lens of storytelling. It highlights three figures, each with their own cultural history: the Kelpie, Wulver and Baobhan Sith. When creating these works, I balanced historical accuracy with contemporary design elements.
These figures and environments were designed in close connection to their traditional folklore. There are small details throughout the backgrounds that reference where these stories took place. Celtic Mythology : Series One combined my personal interest in character design with formal representation of these mythological creatures. While the subject matter of many of these stories are often quite dark, I continued to apply my soft, “cute”, artistic style to the figures.
This resulted in a body of work that showcases two important parts of myself: the development of my art style and the continued research into my Scottish heritage.
