Carol Diaz

BFA 2026 – Interdisciplinary
My work is nourished by a continuous examination of the self: how we come to understand who we are, how we carry our origins with us, and the fears that accompany displacement, migration, and belonging. My upbringing in the Dominican Republic, as well as my migratory experience in Canada, has allowed me to create work that moves between cultural memory, vulnerability, and resilience. Questions of preservation—of people, of place, of identity—are central to my research.
I engage with these questions by visually echoing natural materials, such as amber, honey and yuca, reimagining them as vessels for memory and cultural continuity. Through lightboxes, paint, collage, and tinted plexiglass, I attempt to hold fragments of what I left behind. In ceramics, I replicate roots and organic forms from the Dominican Republic, objects that feel familiar to me yet foreign within the Canadian context. I extend these inquiries into performative actions, using my body to question my position in the places I inhabit.
