Bound Together

What quietly binds us together without us even realizing it? There is a clear thread of skills and crafts passed down through generations on my mom’s side of the family. I wanted to explore this thread and examine what familiar skills get passed down in my family. Bound Together is a series of publications, each centered on an interview with a different family member exploring the crafts they practice. I explored each craft through experimental covers that reflect the crafts discussed in each book.
The Books
I interviewed my great-aunts, my great-uncle, and my mom, focusing on the personal stories behind their crafts. Each book translates these narratives into a unique cover, using material choices to reflect the essence of each craft through my own interpretation. To keep the emphasis on their stories, the interior layouts are intentionally minimal. Bold, prominent quotes are paired with smaller supporting text to provide context. These are complemented by found photographs, transformed into bitmap images to create a cohesive visual language. All of the books were printed at home using an inkjet printer, reinforcing the handmade, intimate quality of my project.

Quilt Book
Auntie Judy is my great-aunt and the twin sister of my nanny. Ever since I can remember, she has always been working on a project, usually a quilt. If you ever needed anything mended or fixed, she could do it for you in a heartbeat. When she brings food to a family event, it’s always delicious and comforting.

Wreath Book
Auntie Bev is married to my Great Uncle Lyle (one of my nanny’s younger brothers). She was always working on a new craft, especially at Christmas. Over the past few years, she’s started inviting me into her workshop to make wreaths with her, which has become something I really look forward to. No matter what we’re working on, it’s always fun just spending that time together.

Pizelle Cookie Book
Auntie Bev, my Nanny’s youngest sister, has always been creative and eager to learn something new. Whether it’s trying out a recipe someone shared with her or experimenting with something that inspired her on Facebook, she’s always up for the challenge. She approaches everything with curiosity and enthusiasm, and she enjoys finding new ways to express her creativity.

Broken Glass Dessert Book
Mary-Ann is my mom. She might not be the most talented cook, but she knows how to make family recipes really well and can make a mean baked good. Growing up, whenever I needed a Halloween costume, had my pants hemmed, or decided to start a random sewing project, she was always there to help.

Uncle Lyle, my Nanny’s younger brother, is always tinkering with something. As a welder, he was constantly starting new projects or helping others with theirs. If he sees something he thinks he can make, he’ll find a way to build it.
